Salvatore "Sam" Madia was born in Italy. He attended public schools in Morgantown, WV, and graduated from West Virginia University with a BS and a MA degree. He also graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Sam is a veteran of World War II.

Retired from teaching at California University of Pennsylvania in January 1986 as an associate professor in industrial technology, he now resides in West Brownsville, PA.
